Background: What is the Spinfoam Environment?

Spinfoam models arise in loop quantum gravity as a sum-over-histories path integral. For a 2-complex (simplicial complex) with bulk faces, the partition function is:

Z = Σ_{j_f} ∏_f A_f(j_f) × ∏_v A_v({j_f ∋ v})

where:

• j_f are spin labels (half-integers) on each bulk face f
• A_f(j_f) = (2j_f + 1) are face amplitude factors (dimension of the SU(2) rep)
• A_v({j_f}) is the vertex amplitude (involves Wigner recoupling coefficients like 6j or 15j symbols)

The GFN models this as a sequential process: start from "all faces unlabeled" (s0), and at each step assign a spin value to one unlabeled face, until all faces are labeled (the terminating state), then exit.

Option A — Pre-computed lookup table (recommended for reproducibility):

• Pre-compute a dense tensor amplitude_table[j_0, j_1, ..., j_{n_faces-1}] of shape (n_spin_values,) * n_faces
• At reward time, index the table with the state tensor
• Fast at training time; requires pre-computation step (can be done at env init)

Option B — On-the-fly computation:

• Requires an external library (wigxjpf, pywigxjpf, or spins)
• More flexible but slower

The original repo uses pre-computed tables with the wigxjpf library for offline construction.

2. Convention Changes vs. Original Implementation

The original torchgfn_spinfoams was written against an older version of torchgfn. Here is what has changed:

3. Amplitude Table Construction (Separate Script)

The amplitude table is expensive to compute and should be done offline. A helper should:

1. Enumerate all n_spin_values ** n_faces spin configurations
2. For each configuration, compute the spinfoam vertex amplitude using recoupling theory
3. Save as a torch.Tensor to disk (e.g., .pt file)

For the EPRL/BC model on a single 4-simplex:

• 10 faces (triangles), with j_max ≤ 3 giving 7^10 ≈ 282M configurations (table construction is the bottleneck)
• Amplitude = ∏_f (2j_f+1)^{1/2} × Wigner15j(j_0, ..., j_9) (up to model-specific factors)
• Requires pywigxjpf or equivalent for 15j symbols

The original repo precomputes this table and ships it. We should follow the same pattern.

5. Questions to Resolve Before Implementation

1. Which 2-complex? Is the target a single 4-simplex (1 vertex, 10 faces) as in the original, or a more general lattice?
2. Which spinfoam model? BF theory, BC model, or EPRL? This affects the vertex amplitude formula.
3. j_max and delta_j? The original uses j_max = 3 with delta_j = 0.5 (so 7 spin values: {0, 0.5, ..., 3.0}).
4. Amplitude table shipping: Should the table be generated on-the-fly at test time (for small j_max) or downloaded from the original repo?
5. Dependencies: The amplitude computation requires pywigxjpf (a Wigner symbol library). Should this be an optional extra dependency or required?

The implementation is straightforward mechanically — the spinfoam env fits cleanly into DiscreteEnv. The main complexity is the amplitude table construction, which requires external quantum gravity libraries. I recommend:

1. Implementing the env skeleton in src/gfn/gym/spinfoam.py (with full credit to @JosephRRB)
2. Adding a standalone src/gfn/gym/helpers/spinfoam_amplitude.py for amplitude table construction
3. Adding basic tests that use a mock amplitude table
4. Adding a tutorial notebook that loads the pre-computed table from the original repo and reproduces the original results

Ready to implement once the questions above are answered (or with reasonable defaults mirroring the original).
