Copy (Ctrl+C / Copy Merged) produces a valid clipboard entry but target apps cannot paste the image #2252

Description

@jsailo

Description
After selecting all and copying an image in Pinta (via Ctrl+C or Edit → Copy Merged), the system clipboard does report a valid image entry (confirmed via xclip -selection clipboard -t TARGETS -o, which lists image/png, image/jpeg, image/bmp, etc.), but pasting into other applications (e.g. WhatsApp Web in a browser) fails — nothing is pasted. This happens consistently regardless of whether the canvas has keyboard focus before copying, and regardless of using Ctrl+C or the Copy Merged menu command.

To Reproduce

  1. Open any image in Pinta.
  2. Click on the canvas to ensure it has focus.
  3. Press Ctrl+A to select all.
  4. Press Ctrl+C (or use Edit → Copy Merged).
  5. Switch to a browser tab (e.g. WhatsApp Web) and attempt to paste (Ctrl+V) into a message/attachment field.
  6. Observe that nothing is pasted, despite xclip -selection clipboard -t TARGETS -o showing valid image targets are present on the clipboard.

Additional Info
Verified with xclip that the clipboard target list includes: image/png, image/tiff, image/jpeg, image/bmp, image/x-bmp, image/x-MS-bmp, image/x-icon, image/x-ico, image/x-win-bitmap, image/vnd.microsoft.icon, application/ico, image/ico, image/icon, text/ico, image/webp. Despite this, target applications cannot retrieve the image data, suggesting Pinta may be dropping clipboard ownership before the paste request is served (X11 clipboard ownership race), rather than a missing-target issue.

Version

  • OS: Zorin OS (X11 session)
  • Pinta version: 3.1.2 (tested via both Flatpak com.github.PintaProject.Pinta and Snap package builds — same behavior on both)
