For example if you have tihs over LXLE at least 12.04.4 The distro maintainers thought metapackages would be a bad idea as you should do a fresh install as you customized it but I am using metapackages here. I don't know how all other respins affect metapackages.

A metapackage in a ppa would work just remember this is not a solution for respins when upgrading as ubuntu release upgrader will remove all ppa on upgrade.
