RAK Wismesh Pocket v3 not working on 1.17.1

Hi,

I recently acquired a new RAK Wismesh Pocket v3 during DEFCON from the Rokland booth. Apparently this is a pre-release radio. I have tried to flash it with the standard RAK4631 firmware, and it boots with a garbled screen that resembles static, but some of the normal interface is apparent.

It was originally flashed with Meshtastic of an unknown version. I started by entering DFU mode and flashing FLASH_ERASE_nrf52_softdevice_v6.uf2 Then I flashed RAK_4631_companion_radio_ble-v1.17.1-d929643.uf2

I am happy to do any testing necessary to get this radio working. Please let me know if you need more information.

Because I did not pay attention to what firmware it shipped with earlier, I have re-flashed it with Meshtastic 2.7.26 (54e0d8d) and confirmed it does work.

Once again, I am available to do any/all testing related to bringing this device to MeshCore.

Hey there, thanks for the report.

The original WisMesh Pocket v2 used the RAK4631 firmware, but this is hardcoded to use SSD1306 display driver.

I discussed the issue with RAK the other day as to why the WisMesh Pocket v3 had this issue, and they explained we need to use the SH1106 driver for this new hardware.

We are still deciding on if we implement dynamic display driver detection, at the expense of larger firmware size, or add a new hardware variant specifically for the WisMesh Pocket v3 which would be configured to use the correct driver.

If you're up to compiling your own firmware for the unit, you'd just need to swap out the DISPLAY_CLASS build flags for the RAK4631 and the import statement in the board class as well.

I tested this several days ago and it worked, but have been side tracked and haven't had a chance to do a PR yet.

Appreciate the followup @liamcottle I will see if I can get it compiled. Based on the large number of hardware variants we already have, it's probably not a bad idea to aim for reduced firmware size and add a new variant. The more the merrier eh?
