The current system is very opaque — it only shows all of the output once the kernel finishes building (and very rarely, it will seem to hang forever because of an error in the kernel building subsystem that doesn't re-try building the kernel).
Also, if the kernel isn't built yet, the codex viewer frontend will crash.
