Problem
Some endpoint-security, device-control, and asset-management tools identify the connected NanoKVM through its manufacturer and product-name strings.
Because NanoKVM may be unfamiliar to these systems, it can appear as an unknown device or may be incorrectly classified as a potentially unsafe, surveillance, or spy device. This causes problems when NanoKVM is used legitimately in managed workplace environments.
Requested improvement
Please consider adding a firmware option that allows users to select standards-compliant, neutral USB device descriptions, such as:
- USB Keyboard
- USB Mouse
- USB Video Device
- USB Composite Device
A configurable “generic compatibility mode” could remove the visible NanoKVM brand name from USB product strings while continuing to use valid USB identifiers and normal HID/UVC behaviour.
It would also be useful to allow these descriptor fields to be configured through the NanoKVM web interface or configuration file, with documentation and a reset-to-default option.
Important consideration
The device should not impersonate another manufacturer or reuse third-party identifiers belonging to companies such as Logitech or Apple.
Using neutral generic product descriptions while retaining valid NanoKVM USB vendor and product identifiers would be safer and more standards-compliant.
Expected benefits
- Fewer false-positive security alerts
- Better compatibility with enterprise device-control systems
- Less confusion for IT administrators
- Continued standards-compliant USB behaviour
Please consider adding this feature in a future NanoKVM firmware update.
