Support importing arbitrary external video files (not just webcam/audio) into the editor timeline #824

Description

@ajayr4j

Summary

The docs/marketing copy on recordly.dev say: "Import audio files and webcam video with full timeline control. Layer, sync, and refine external media right inside your project." This confirms import for audio-only files and webcam-recorded video, but I could not find a way to import an arbitrary external video file (e.g. a short clip shot on a phone, not captured through Recordly's own webcam recorder) into the editor timeline.

What I tried

  • Dragging an .mp4 file from the Ubuntu file manager directly onto the editor timeline — no drop target reacted.
  • Looking for an explicit "Import Media" / "+" button near the timeline — couldn't find one for generic video files (only saw options tied to webcam capture / audio regions).

Use case

I have a short (~25s) external video clip (not recorded through Recordly) that I'd like to append to the end of a screen recording edited in Recordly, without leaving the app to pre-composite it elsewhere.

Ask

Either:

  1. Point me to the existing import path if one already exists and I'm missing it (would also suggest making it more discoverable / documenting it in the README), or
  2. Treat this as a feature request: allow importing arbitrary external video files (with audio) onto the timeline as a new clip/track, similar to how webcam video and audio files are already supported.

Environment

  • OS: Ubuntu (Linux)
  • Recordly: latest as of this writing

Happy to test a fix/PR if pointed in the right direction.
