Can't start zed from linux build 'no such file or directory "js../manual/intro.md"'

when starting from a linux build I get an error along the lines of:
no such file or directory "js../manual/intro.md"
I tried both building as root and building as a regular user and installing to the default prefix and installing to my user directory all with the same result. And, searching for this file reveals that it doesn't exist so either the build target wasn't hit, or something is out of whack.
