PolyGuard-VLM Plus

PolyGuard-VLM Plus is an advanced, high-performance, real-time adversarial defense guardrail and gateway proxy layer designed to protect Vision-Language Models (VLMs) and Multimodal LLMs (e.g., LLaVA, LLaMA-Vision, GPT-4V) from cross-lingual prompt injections, typographic visual attacks, and multimodal jailbreaks—specifically targeting low-resource regional languages (such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Swahili) and visual image artifacts.

PolyGuard-VLM Plus Security Telemetry Dashboard

1. Executive Summary & Architecture

The Multimodal Safety Problem

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) rely heavily on safety alignment (RLHF/DPO) performed primarily on English text data. Adversaries exploit two critical security vulnerabilities:

  1. Cross-Lingual Evasion: Translating prompt injections into low-resource regional languages (e.g., Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Swahili), achieving jailbreak bypass rates over 70% higher than English.
  2. Typographic & Visual Attacks: Embedding text prompt injections directly into image pixels (e.g., signboards, memes, receipts, document scans) or applying adversarial noise patches to bypass text-only filters.

The PolyGuard-VLM Plus Solution

PolyGuard-VLM Plus sits ahead of your VLM infrastructure as a ultra-low-latency security middleware (~15 ms – 45 ms text inspection latency; average overall latency ~290 ms as measured on live telemetry) that:

  1. Maps Multilingual & Visual Inputs into a Unified 512-Dim Space: Combines sentence-transformers/LaBSE (109+ languages) with OpenCLIP (ViT-B-32) vision transformer features.
  2. Analyzes Spatial Edge Density & Zero-Shot Threat Concepts: Scans images for typographic text overlays, high-contrast prompt injections, and adversarial noise patches.
  3. Evaluates Topological Graph Anomaly Scores ($S_{\text{OOD}}$): Projects multimodal vectors into a self-supervised intent graph to measure Mahalanobis distance and Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) relative to adversarial clusters.
  4. Proxies Safe Requests to Upstream VLMs: Automatically routes approved requests to upstream VLM providers (Ollama / LLaVA / vLLM / OpenAI) and returns structured response payloads while blocking malicious attempts with HTTP 403.
