This initiative is currently under development. Stay tuned and check back here for updates!
For now, you can read our preliminary draft goals below, explore the first version of Awesome Demographic Methods, and contribute to the list via our GitHub Repository.
- A Dedicated Global Community: Many population scientists worldwide have spent years contributing to open science, developing open-source software packages (in R, Python, and other languages), sharing open-access teaching materials, building public databases, and advocating for transparent research practices.
- An Eager New Generation: A growing cohort of early-career demographers is enthusiastic about open science and looking for ways to participate and contribute.
- An Opportunity to Connect: While excellent curated resources like the Applied Demography Toolbox exist, demographic tools and learning materials are often scattered across personal websites, university portals, and disconnected repositories.
We want to bridge these gaps by building Open Science Demography as a global, community-driven space to consolidate resources, share open practices, and foster collaboration across the population sciences.
We aim to:
- Consolidate Knowledge: Maintain a comprehensive, open-access directory of demographic tools, packages, databases, and educational resources.
- Amplify Existing Initiatives: Support and collaborate with established efforts like the EAPS Working Group on Open Science in Demography, and encourage the creation of similar groups in other regional and international associations (such as the PAA, IUSSP, and others).
- Foster Community: Provide a welcoming space for demographers to share ideas, co-develop open-source tools, and support one another in adopting open workflows.
What do you think we should focus on? We would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
While we are in the process of setting up dedicated communication channels, you can get involved today by:
- Adding to the Awesome List: If you know of an open-source package, dataset, or learning guide, please submit it to the Awesome Demographic Methods repository.
- Sharing Ideas: What features or resources would be most helpful to you? Share your suggestions by opening an issue in our repository. Or writing to one of the current members. If you wish to join as a member of the community, send an email to one of the current members.
- Discussions between currently joined members: Please open the
Discussionstab in the GitHub organization page and share your thoughts, thanks. https://github.com/orgs/OpenScienceDemography/discussions
How to mark your membership in this GitHub community as public? Please go to the members tab, there you have the option to make your membership publicly visible (photo below).
Please note that our resource list is currently a work in progress, and we rely on community contributions to make it as comprehensive as possible. Thank you for your support!
