Verifying Day of the Tentacle (1993) (LucasArts)

Checklist

Have adequate installation instructions been provided to match any config files in the DOSZ?

No installation is required. DoDAT extracts the complete runtime game from the source CD, while the DOSC supplies the required configuration and launch options.

Have any official patches been applied, if necessary?

No separate official patch is required for this release.

Have digital versions (Steam, GOG) been checked for matching?

Yes. The currently available Steam and GOG releases are Day of the Tentacle Remastered and do not match this original 1993 DOS release.

Can the game benefit from using embedded data or embedded patches in the datfile?

No.

Can DoDAT build the game from the install media?

Yes. DoDAT successfully built the DOSZ from an exact Redump-matching BIN/CUE source and matched all 65 ROMs.

If the game requires a yml in the DOSZ, has it been added to the yml folder in the repo?

Not applicable. The configuration is supplied by the DOSC.

Are there .PIF or .ICO or Win32 .EXE files that could be excluded?

Yes. The original CD's TENTACLE.PIF and DOTTICON.ICO files are not included in the DOSZ.

Do the file timestamps match the installation media?

Yes. The files and metadata were produced directly from the matching CD image.

Does the DOSZ run standalone?

Yes. It contains the complete runtime game data and does not require the source CD. The DOSC supplies automatic configuration and launching.

For CD games, can the game be set up to run without a CD mounted?

Yes. The required speech and game data are included in the DOSZ, and no CD image needs to be mounted.

Can the game benefit from using CHDtoOGG?

No. The verified DOSZ contains no CD image or audio tracks.

Is the game creating a swap file in the .pure.zip that could be avoided by increasing memory size? Or is it creating other bloated files that could be prevented by adding them in the DOSZ?

No. Runtime testing produced only the expected small autoboot state and save-game data.

Does the DOSC contain problematic data (i.e. copyright issue)?

No. It contains only configuration data.

Does the DOSC have copy protection removed, if possible?

No copy-protection obstruction was encountered, and no bypass was required.

Is the game running at the correct speed? Is CPU year specified?

Yes. The game runs correctly with cpu_year: 1993.

Is the DOSC auto-running and skipping past any obstructions? Does it use WAITMODECHANGE if possible?

Yes. It automatically launches C:\TENTACLE.EXE. WAITMODECHANGE is not required.

Does the game have MT-32 support? If so, is it correctly using MT-32 (old) or CM-32L (new), going by the Vogons Wiki?

Yes. The DOSC provides a CM-32L option using the game's Roland configuration.

Does the game have General MIDI support?

Yes. A General MIDI option is provided and works correctly.

Is the game set up to run with the best quality graphics options by default?

Yes. It uses the game's native VGA graphics.

For certain old games only - are the graphics/audio improved by specifying video_card: pcjr, tandy, or generic_cga?

Not applicable.

Does the game have a mouse cursor that benefits from enabling input_directmouse?

No. Mouse input works correctly without it.

Does a game with separate episodes/executables have the options named and ordered properly in the DOSZ? Do they use the run_utility feature?

Not applicable.

Does the game share saves with a sequel, expansion, etc? If so, is it updated to use the .savename feature?

Not applicable.

Is the game data in the root of the ZIP (unless game does not work that way)?

Yes. The runtime files are in the root, with the required MANIAC subdirectory retained.

Is the entry in the right variant file (i.e. Freeware)?

Yes. This is the primary commercial release and has been promoted to the verified DAT.

For games which include CD images, is there a smaller installation variant that offers the same features but needs less files?

Not applicable to the verified entry because its DOSZ contains no CD image. The separate CHD installation variant remains unverified.

Comment

Verified using an exact Redump-matching source for disc 43132. The source BIN has SHA-1 6d97c56fcba9fe5b6988938c45563ea2b2c93c13.

DoDAT successfully built Day of the Tentacle (1993) (LucasArts).dosz and reported:

[OK] Correctly matched all 65 roms

Runtime testing confirmed automatic startup, VGA graphics, Sound Blaster audio and speech, General MIDI, mouse and keyboard input, save/load functionality, clean exit, and successful relaunch.

The existing DAT entry was promoted unchanged from the primary unverified DAT to the verified DAT. Its DOSC was moved unchanged to the verified DOSC directory. The separate installation variant was not changed.
