Overview

This project showcases a complete CI/CD pipeline for a Java-based web application, leveraging Jenkins for continuous integration and ArgoCD for continuous deployment. This setup exemplifies modern DevOps practices, enabling efficient, automated software delivery while ensuring high-quality deployments.

What is ArgoCD?

ArgoCD is a declarative, GitOps continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes. It allows developers to define the desired state of their applications and manage deployments through Git repositories, providing several benefits:

Project Structure

  • Jenkinsfile: Defines the CI/CD pipeline, including stages for building, testing, and deploying the application.
  • deployment.yaml: Kubernetes deployment configuration for the application.
  • service.yaml: Exposes the application as a service in the Kubernetes cluster.

Pipeline Stages

  1. Cleanup Workspace: Ensures a fresh build environment.
  2. Checkout from SCM: Retrieves the latest code from GitHub.
  3. Build Application: Compiles the application using Maven.
  4. Run Tests: Executes unit tests to verify functionality.
  5. SonarQube Analysis: Performs static code analysis to ensure code quality.
  6. Build & Push Docker Image: Creates a Docker image and pushes it to the container registry.
  7. Update Kubernetes Deployment: Modifies deployment tags to reflect the new version.
  8. Trigger CD Pipeline: Initiates deployment in the target environment using ArgoCD.

Kubernetes Deployment

The application is deployed as a Kubernetes Deployment with the following characteristics:

  • Replicas: Ensures high availability by running multiple instances.
  • Readiness & Liveness Probes: Monitors the health of the application to ensure reliability.
  • ConfigMap: Manages configuration data separately from application code.

  • 📦 Version Control: Maintain all configuration files and code in a Git repository for collaboration and tracking.
  • 🚀 GitOps Approach: Use ArgoCD to implement a GitOps workflow, ensuring that the desired state of the application is defined in Git.
