Multi-Color-Extruder

ARC M1 Custom BMG Extruder is a lightweight direct-drive extruder for high-speed multi-color 3D printing. It works with the custom ARC M1 AMS and the Enraged Rabbit Carrot Feeder (ERCF). Dual-drive gears provide strong grip, precise extrusion, reliable filament changes, and broad material support. Modular design enables easy maintenance. Efficient.

Custom BMG-Based Multi-Color Extrude

The ARC M1 Custom BMG Extruder is a lightweight, high-performance direct-drive extrusion system specifically engineered for reliable multi-color FDM 3D printing. Based on the proven dual-drive BMG gear architecture, the extruder has been extensively redesigned to provide higher gripping force, improved filament control, and seamless integration with automatic filament management systems.

Unlike a standard BMG extruder, the ARC M1 version is optimized for continuous filament loading and unloading, making it ideal for automated color changes. The hardened dual-drive gear system provides excellent traction on the filament, minimizing slipping while ensuring precise extrusion across a wide range of materials including PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, Nylon, and composite filaments. The optimized gear reduction significantly increases extrusion torque while allowing the use of compact NEMA 17 stepper motors.

The extruder is fully compatible with the custom-built ARC M1 AMS (Automatic Material System), enabling automatic switching between multiple filament spools during a print. Communication between the AMS and the printer ensures reliable filament feeding, retraction, and loading without user intervention, allowing complex multi-color and multi-material prints to be produced efficiently.

In addition to the ARC M1 AMS, the extruder has been designed with compatibility in mind and can also operate with the Enraged Rabbit Carrot Feeder (ERCF), providing flexibility for users who prefer an open-source multi-material platform. This allows the same extrusion system to be deployed in different hardware ecosystems while maintaining consistent print quality.

The extruder incorporates a compact modular body that reduces moving mass, improving acceleration and print stability while minimizing ringing at high print speeds. Its optimized filament path supports both rigid and flexible materials by reducing unsupported filament travel and improving feeding consistency.

Designed for open-source development and future upgrades, the ARC M1 Custom BMG Extruder features serviceable components, simplified maintenance, and modular construction for easy replacement of gears, bearings, and wear parts. Combined with the ARC M1 printer platform and Klipper-based control system, the extruder delivers fast, accurate, and dependable material extrusion for modern high-speed, multi-color additive manufacturing applications, making it suitable for makers, educational institutions, research laboratories, and industrial prototyping environments.
