This lets us use cheap chinese clones of STLink instead of the real thing. Tested read -a, works well. Not sure about other features.

This is cool.
It should be merged, as it seem to be still compatible with ST link.
Any idea if it also works with Segger?

This repo already worked with STLink clones. Thats what I used in the article: https://www.optiv.com/insights/discover/blog/automated-unlocking-nrf51-series-socs-nrfsec

Have you tested all of the feature or any additional debug interfaces?

My concern is this commit doesn't support backwards compatibility to use the basic swd library and the user needs to have working openocd installation. it would be good if openocd was option flag.
