Summary

  • add a complete Phi transmutation of News from Nowhere chapter V, "Children on the Road"
  • preserve the chapter's road journey, forest camp, school joke, argument about chosen learning, affection for book-students, and closing exchange about Westminster's old buildings
  • add chapter 5 to the book README and site editorial metadata
  • regenerate the phonetic-neighbour baseline with the new active-corpus attestations

Fidelity and language work

The chapter contains 292 ordered four-line units. Their morris: lines reconstruct the complete chapter V source body exactly after the source file's normal whitespace and line-break normalization: 13,932 characters on both sides, with no omission, duplication, or reordering.

Source identities remain in Morris's witness when Phi should not invent a replacement. This covers geography, language names, historical institutions, architecture, exact ages, and source-specific tree names. Existing Phi vocabulary is used wherever it is genuinely available, including direct pilomu for sycamore after the vocabulary audit caught an earlier generic rendering.

The transmutation uses the full base and optional vocabulary without adding a root or registering a compound. Relevant module terms include luseri for provenance, thesani for skill, pherami for dependency, nelore for preservation, and whakeru for objection. Coercive teaching and harmful social relations remain visible without importing heroic conflict vocabulary.

The independent grammar pass repaired modifier and Slot 1 order, replaced serial shortcuts with complete-event frames, restored purpose-first order for coming to play in the forest, and removed an invalid passive-causative stack. Exact measurements stay in the source witness where Phi uses qualitative time and life thresholds instead.

Voice and editorial pass

The complete English layer received a separate Humanizer and Phi voice pass. That pass found inventory-like chains in the opening and movement notes, so the names and skills were divided into sentences with more natural rhythm. It also found back-translations borrowing detail that existed only in Morris's line: "tumbling" was removed where Phi said only play, and "centuries ago" became "long ago" where Phi used qualitative ancient time. The final authored prose has no new em or en dashes outside the protected Phi-heading convention, no curly quotation marks, no -bearing forms, and none of the voice guide's banned inflation vocabulary.
