Heesoo Jang

I am an Assistant Professor of Media Law and Ethics in the Department of Journalism at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

My research asks who governs what a democracy knows. I study how journalism, courts, election systems, and the communities they serve are becoming dependent on platforms and AI companies they do not control—and how that dependency redistributes power and accountability.

I combine qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods across national contexts, with a focus on scholarship in service of a more democratic and just society.

Research programs

  • AI governance, ethics, and democracy. LLMs and elections, public discourse around AI ethics, infrastructure dependency, and AI in legal systems
  • Journalism, democracy, and media accountability. Election denial, democracy-framed journalism, far-right news, and platform policy
  • Platform harms and digital justice. Deepfakes, image-based abuse, digital sex trafficking, privacy, and transnational platform power
  • AI, corporate responsibility, and public trust. Responsible-AI communication, crisis communication, and public expectations of AI companies

Selected project

  • youtube-stat2data — a research utility for collecting public YouTube video metadata as CSV data

Additional reproducible research and teaching materials will be shared when they are ready for public release and their data, copyright, and collaboration requirements allow it.

Teaching and public scholarship

I teach and write about journalism, media law, platforms, AI, and democratic accountability. Selected teaching materials, interviews, and public writing are available on my academic website.
